Generic Xalatan Available Soon

The FDA recently announced that they gave tentative approval for a generic formulation of Xalatan. This is potentially great news for our many patients who take Xalatan to help lower their intraocular pressure for glaucoma. We know that a Canadian company called Apotex will be manufacturing the eyedrop, but we do not have an exact release date at this time. We expect local pharmacies to be carrying the medication soon, but we do not yet know how much cheaper the generic will be priced. It has been our experience that when eye drops become generic, local pharmacies are keeping prices inflated for a short period before ultimately dropping the price.

Jaime our ( front office) check in secretary had lasik surgery with Dr. Elkins in September. "It's life changing beyond words!" remarks Jaime. She no longer has the dryness and irritation she felt when wearing contact lenses.

"I decided to have lasik because I've worn glasses since elementary school and contacts since middle school! I wasn't comfortable waking up every morning and not being able to see anything. Especially, ever since the Northridge earthquake in 1994. I had taken out my contacts that night and didn't have my glasses in reach! After that I had to keep my glasses right next to me at all times when I'd go to sleep!

Thanks to Dr. Elkins, my daily life has improved dramatically since lasik! When I wake up...I can immediately see where I'm going! I now enjoy all of my favorite outdoor activities so much more without any worry or hassle that comes along with glasses or contacts!"

New Hope for AMD Patients

Hope for Macular Degeneration Patients: The Implantable Miniature Telescope

Patients who have lost central vision due to end-stage, age-related macular degeneration may soon have hope for some restoration of their visual field with the Implantable Miniature Telescope (IMT). Developed by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies, the 4-mm implantable telescope replaces the lens in one eye and redirects central vision images onto undamaged parts of the retina surrounding the macula, using either 2.2x or 3x magnification. The untreated eye provides peripheral vision for mobility and orientation. VisionCare has filed for FDA approval. With promising clinical trial results, we look forward to FDA approval and being able to offer this exciting new technology to our patients.
